What is a UC Bearing?

A UC Bearing, also known as an insert bearing, is a type of deep groove ball bearing with a wider-than-standard inner ring, a spherical outer diameter, and a set-screw locking mechanism on the inner ring. The spherical outer diameter allows the bearing to self-align inside its housing, compensating for shaft misalignment and mounting errors of up to ±3°.

UC Bearings are never used alone — they are designed to be inserted into a compatible cast iron or pressed steel housing, together forming a complete Housed Bearing Unit. The housing type determines the designation of the unit: a UC bearing in a Pillow Block housing becomes a UCP unit, in a two-bolt flange housing a UCFL unit, and so on.

UC Bearing Series and Types

The UC series housing bearing units are classified by their housing type:

  • UCP (Pillow Block): Two-bolt base mounting along the shaft. Most common type for general industrial applications. Available in bore sizes 12mm to 90mm.
  • UCFL (Two-Bolt Oval Flange): Flange mounting perpendicular to shaft using two bolts. Ideal for restricted spaces where pillow block cannot be used.
  • UCF (Four-Bolt Square Flange): Four-bolt square flange for maximum rigidity and load capacity. Used in heavy-duty applications.
  • UCT (Take-Up): Adjustable take-up frame for conveyor belt tensioning. The frame slides along a track for belt adjustment.
  • UCFC (Piloted Round Flange): Circular four-bolt flange with a precision pilot diameter for accurate location in a machined bore.
  • UC (Insert Bearing Only): The bearing component alone, used as a replacement part for any compatible UC housing.

Selecting the right UC bearing unit involves four considerations:

  1. Bore Size: Match the bearing bore to your shaft diameter. UC units are available in metric (12mm–90mm) and inch (½”–3½”) sizes.
  2. Housing Type: Choose the housing based on your mounting surface and available space: UCP for base mounting, UCFL/UCF for flange mounting, UCT for take-up applications.
  3. Load and Speed: Check the dynamic (Cr) and static (C₀r) load ratings against your application requirements.
  4. Environment: For wet, dusty, or corrosive environments, confirm the seal type is suitable. Bonded nitrile seals are standard; stainless steel inserts are available for corrosive conditions.
